Glass jewellery – bright tulips and millefiori herald spring

Shiny glass beads are radiant with reflected and refracted light but with gently convex surfaces which are soft and smooth against the skin. Glass jewellery encompasses a wide range of styles; from facetted crystal through ethnic handmade to marbled and embellished the variety is vast. From within this myriad panoply however, emerges one particular genre that has endured in popularity for centuries – and that is Millifiori (literally meaning thousand flowers). This is an old technique which involves the production of glass rods which are ‘welded’ in a kiln and pulled until thin creating multi-coloured complex patterns which are viewable as a cut cross section.
